According to the ministerial decision NO. 22 in 1999, dealing with the organizational structure of Ministry of Public Works and Housing, the ministry is in charge of the following:
1. Build, maintain and improve federal highways.
2. Construct federal public facilities and buildings and supervise their maintenance.
3. Supervise expenditure for constructions from the general budget, putting in mind some of the Emirates dire necessity, and execute these projects with coordination with the concerned Emirate.
4. Prepare the studies, conditions and specifications of town planning and housing projects.
5. Design the federal public facilities projects.
6. Maintain the federal public buildings.
7. Plan and design the terms and specifications for federal housing projects, announce the tenders and select the contractors and advisory corporations, supervise the execution and hand over the amounts of payments from the ministry budget, without interfering with specializations given to the Permanent Committee for Projects.
8. Plan, design, and execute federal building projects, including kindergartens, schools, dispensaries, mosques, markets, social centers, government departments and other public buildings.
9. Cooperate and exchange consultations with the concerned agencies regarding the planning and execution duties stated in the two articles above.
10. Distribute houses established by the federal government to citizens eligible for them, in cooperation with the local authorities at the concerned Emirate.
11. Provide technical advice and help local administrations in the process of planning and executing their own housing projects.
12. Any other tasks that can be assigned to the ministry in accordance with the legal regulations.
